The ProSocial Matrix (aka the We Matrix) is a science-based approach to getting people working together toward shared goals- especially when teams are stuck, siloed, or talking past each other. In part, it’s based on the Toyota (or Lean Manufacturing) framework. It’s also based on the Nobel Prize-winning economic work of Elinor Ostrom, Ph.D. (2009), who was the first woman to win.

In 2011, Dr. Polk combined these with the ACT Matrix Process. His focus was to bring Kiichiro Toyoda’s words to life—When asked to summarize his “lean” approach, Toyoda said something like, “Go to the place where work is happening and ask respectful questions.” The ProSocial Matrix provides a step-by-step guide for asking respectful questions in any workplace, starting with shared purposes, acknowledging obstacles, identifying actions for relief, and achieving shared purposes.
